January Block of the Month

Log Cabin Block

In 2022 I will be running a patchwork block of the month! Woooohooo!!!!

Quick context…. My Mum owned a patchwork and coffee shop when I was growing up so for me sewing, like cooking, is just in my blood. Mum used to run what she called her ‘dollar blocks’ which were patterns she had written up nicely of classic patchwork blocks. She used to sell them for (as you’ve probably guessed) $1 as an affordable way for people to dip their toes into the patchwork world. Because she is a legend, she has de-branded them and given them to me to use for our block of the month. During their month they will be a dollar then be $2 after that. I will write up a post with step by step pictures so hopefully they will be very straight forward to follow along with.

To that end we are starting off nice and simply with a log cabin block.

You can purchase your pattern here:

So to start with you will need to pick your fabrics. Personally I will be using a white tone on tone as my ‘background’ fabric throughout this quilt then raiding Mum and I’s stash for fabulous pinks and greens to accompany (with perhaps a few purchased supplements…. because one can never own too much fabric…..).

Personally I think log cabins are most effective when you choose 2 colour ways and then arrange the fabrics so they radiate out from either dark to light or light to dark (as mine is above). But you do you!

Once you’ve chosen, use a rotary cutter and mat to cut the pieces in the fabric requirements section.

As with most patchwork, these are designed for a quarter inch seam allowance.

Given the simplicity of this block I don’t think I need to ramble much more, will simply pop in my step by step photos. Just remember to steam iron well (without stretching) between every seam. Happy sewing!
