Stuff the washing up!
Mix butter, syrup and sugar over low heat until dissolved. Add the dates and cook for 5ish minutes to soften without boiling. Remove from heat and add flour. Pop in a slice tray and bake at 180 deg cel until it's golden and pulls away from the sides. Poke holes in the top of the slice and top with caramel icing while still hot.
Melt butter and sugar. Boil for a few minutes until it begins to caramelise. Remove from heat and whisk through milk. Add icing sugar then spread on slice.
